The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia recently released a report that revealed hundreds of thousands of people in the area are struggling to access mental health care.

is an alternative for those who cannot afford more expensive treatments. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, the Mental Health Foundation of Northern Virginia has been helping Fairfax and Falls Church City residents with serious mental illnesses access resources that would otherwise be denied them. There are several reasons why people in Northern Virginia cannot access mental health services.The area has 5,100 licensed mental health providers, including nearly 4,800 who are trained to provide psychotherapy and 350 who are also trained in psychopharmacology (psychiatrists and nurses who specialize in psychiatry). The Alliance works to improve the community's capacity to obtain, process, and understand the information and basic health services needed to make appropriate health care decisions and adopt behaviors that promote health. People receiving treatment at the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board (CSB), a public mental health agency in Fairfax County, Virginia, apply for grants with the support of their case managers. The Mental Health Foundation of Northern Virginia helps people who are currently in treatment for a serious mental illness by providing them with the funds that these people need to help them achieve their wellness goals. The VMAP program is managed by the Virginia Medical Society Foundation (MSVF) under a contract with the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services. To ensure everyone in the community is aware of mental illness and how it affects individuals, families, and the community, there needs to be more education and awareness.
